Mathematical Modeling of Tidal Effects in Groundwater

This paper presents a special use of the linear poroelasticity theory to describe tidally induced groundwater oscillations. Two models of oscillation inducing mechanism make use of this theory to predict groundwater level fluctuations. The numerical solutions of both models are presented and compared with well water level measurement obtained in Police Basin, north-east Bohemia.     

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the prefrontal cortex modulates working memory performance: combined behavioural and electrophysiological evidence

Background  

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a technique that can systematically modify behaviour by inducing changes in the underlying brain function. In order to better understand the neuromodulatory effect of tDCS, the present study examined the impact of tDCS on performance in a working memory (WM) task and its underlying neural activity. In two experimental sessions, participants performed a letter two-back WM task after sham and either anodal or cathodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).     

Optical microscopy at high pressure : P-T phase behaviour of 80cb and CBOOA and their mixtures

By direct texture observations under pressure in a diamond anvil cell, the phase behaviour of 80CB and CB00A and their mixtures have been investigated. The maximum pressure (p_M) of ocurrence of the smectic A phase (smA) runs through a maximum value as a function of mole fraction, the highest p_M being observed at about 2.2 kbar for x(CBOOA)-0.284.
